HONG KYUNGHWA

Root Dance Company

Root Dance Company, inspired by the natural cycle of tree growth, developed the Root Method. The company utilizes elements derived from nature such as earth, sun, energy, gravity, wind, water, and air to perceive the body as an element of nature itself, activating bodily sensations to create organic movements and develop creative movements through flexible thinking. The company aims to contribute to a rich artistic life in a sustainable future society by focusing on the diversity of the body and reflecting various phenomena of humanity, culture, and society in their works. Established as Hong Kyunghwa Contemporary Dance Company in 2013, it changed its name to Root Dance Company in 2024.

Since its establishment in 2013, the company has been selected for choreographer fostering projects, creator art funds support, and overseas residency projects by various organizations including the Korea Arts and Culture Support Association, Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, Goyang Cultural Foundation, Professional Dance Support Center, and Arts Management Support Center. Hong Kyunghwa herself has received accolades such as the Dancer of the Year Award from the Korea Contemporary Dance Association in 2019, the Excellence Award and Choreography Award at the 38th Seoul Dance Festival in 2017, and the Best Production Award and Best Media Award at the PADAF Convergence Performance Festival in 2019.

Dance connects people regardless of race, language, or environment. Even with diverse backgrounds, when we start moving our bodies to the rhythm and dance together, we become one. That’s the power of dance. I believe in this power and want to share its energy with others. I want to share my experiences and express dance to diverse people around the world. That’s always been my dream as a choreographer and educator. I am ready to embark on this journey together.
